The best of days and the worst of days......

Went ab diving today with my buddy John (John T) for what might be the last dive of the year for us. We have been tracking the ocean conditions for awhile now, but every day we had off was a crappy day to dive but then a ray of light was shining on us to dive today, so we packed up our gear and headed up north to Ocean Cove around 7am. We got there a little after 10 after a stop at Diekman's in Bodega Bay, only to be treated to a beautiful sight.... the ocean was calm, flat and from the cliffs we could clearly see right through the water to the bottom....

Possibly a future diver

I mostly just eat sea food and whether or not ive ever eaten abalone im not sure. i mostly love all sea food so it would be a new experence to eat abalone i think. i also like to cook food so if i ever do go diving ill be able to to make something out of it so that will be cool.

I've never been diving for abalone and i've never seen it but it sounds fun and it sounds like a sport i could someday get into. ive always loved to swim whether it be in a pool, lake, or ocean so to be somewhat deep in the ocean looking for abalone would be pretty fun.

Respect the Stone Crab

Nearly every year for my birthday, I reserve a campground or two at Woodside in Salt Point SP for the a weekend in August. This is just one tiny story from the trip this year.

Diving with Legends

I had the awesome experience of learning how to scuba dive with one of the local experts of the Bay Area, Jim Steele. We decided to do our checkout dive at Salt Point instead of the boring Break Water (San Carlos Beach) in Monterey. After our checkout dive and lunch, Jim turned to me and asked if I wanted to try Ab Diving... heck yeah, I said.. lets get wet again!

Gary Costello's Story

My best friend Harvey and I were diving a 12 ft deep area usually closed out by waves and surge but that August day it was calm and had at least 10 ft viz. We were looking for big ones when I spotted an opening in the kelp with with a sandy bottom box canyon . I dove down and followed the sand seeing some nice abs on the rock wall where it met the sand. As I reached the end of the canyon I saw 2 very large abs. I had already gotten two 9 plus abs so I dropped my marker on at the end of the canyon and called my friend over and told him to take a look.

The Dollar Bill

I'm still waiting on the complete story from these guys. But as I've been told they have been doing this for years. I believe one of them lives back east currently. But they will dive around 20 ft. just to out pick the other. Who ever picks and brings in the larger ab wins the dollars and then signs and dates it. There are chick scratches all over the dollar bill. Possibly a fun tradition for you and your buddies.

Easy Pickin's

My first abalone was near a place called "little hubcap." I'm not sure exactly why it was called "little hubcap," what I have heard is that the name came about because someone, probably after drinking a few beers, once thought a round abalone shell looked like a hub cap. Anyways, I was only nine at the time... My father and all of his buddies were out rock picking and diving. It's funny to think how much work is put into rock picking when diving is so much easier.
